Is a travel eSIM cheaper than Canadian carrier roaming in India?

Dramatically. Two weeks of Bell or TELUS daily roaming in India runs roughly $224-252 CAD. A 10GB travel eSIM for the same period is around US$14, and a genuinely unlimited one about US$68. That is a 10-20x difference.

Does unlimited data on a travel eSIM really mean unlimited?

Usually not. Airalo, aloSIM, Holafly and Saily all throttle to 1 Mbps after about 3GB per day, and Nomad after 2GB. Ubigi is the exception, giving 60GB at full speed before dropping to 2 Mbps.

Will a travel eSIM work on my phone in India?

If you bought your phone in Canada, almost certainly yes. The trap runs the other way: several models sold in India ship without eSIM support, and a Canadian iPhone 17 has no SIM tray at all, so you cannot fall back to a physical Indian SIM. Install and activate your eSIM before you fly.

If you are flying to India to see family, the single cheapest thing you can do before you leave is spend twenty minutes on this. Two weeks of Canadian carrier roaming costs more than most people's flights to Delhi cost in taxes — and a travel eSIM does the same job for roughly a tenth to a twentieth of the price. Here is the honest comparison, including where the eSIM is the wrong answer.

Two carrier details worth knowing before you rely on roaming. Bell removed pay-per-use data entirely on 1 May 2026 — so for Bell customers the risk in 2026 is not a shock bill, it is landing with no data at all until you buy a pass. TELUS still bills pay-per-use internationally at $5–10 per MB — that is $5,000–$10,000 per GB if you forget to activate a pass. We could not verify Rogers' India daily rate: India appears in their Asia Travel Pass destinations, but no rate for India renders on any Rogers page. Check your own account before you fly rather than trusting any number, including ours.

What the comparison sites miss

Four things we found reading the fine print

Trap 1

"Unlimited" nearly always means 3 GB a day

Airalo, aloSIM, Holafly and Saily all throttle to 1 Mbps after about 3 GB per day; Nomad throttles after 2 GB. Only Ubigi gives you 60 GB at full speed before easing to 2 Mbps — which is why it is both the cheapest unlimited plan here and the only one worth the word.

Trap 2

Holafly caps your hotspot at 1 GB a day

It sells "unlimited" but limits tethering to 1 GB per day — a 7-day plan includes 7 GB of hotspot, total. Every other provider here allows unrestricted tethering. If you are the one sharing data with visiting parents, this is disqualifying.

Trap 3

Holafly charges India a ~51% premium

Holafly prices Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, the UK and Europe identically — $73.90 for 30 days. India alone is $111.90. Same product, same duration, half again the price.

Trap 4

Airalo's India listing contradicts itself

The customer-facing bullet says it "operates on the Jio network", while the operator record on the same page lists Vodafone. Both strings are live. Airalo's India plans are also flagged 4G-only, where Holafly and Saily advertise 5G where available.

Before you fly — this is the important bit

The Canadian phone trap in India

Most eSIM guides ask "does your phone support eSIM?" For a phone bought in Canada the answer is almost always yes. The real problems run the other way, and no template page covers them.

1. A Canadian iPhone 17 has no SIM tray at all. Apple Canada lists the iPhone 17 as dual-eSIM with no physical tray; the Indian model still has one. So if your eSIM fails in India, you cannot simply buy a local Airtel or Jio SIM and drop it in. Worse, getting a new Indian eSIM means visiting a carrier store in person — every Indian carrier's self-serve eSIM flow only converts an existing physical SIM.

2. Install and activate before you leave Canada. In January 2024 Apple and Google removed Airalo and Holafly from Indian app stores after a Department of Telecommunications order. Nomad states the underlying rule in its own checkout data: data plans "cannot be purchased in UAE/CN/IN upon arrival according to local policy." Whether the app-store block still stands in 2026 we could not verify — but the safe move is unchanged: buy, install and test the eSIM while you are still on Canadian wi-fi.

3. If you are buying a local SIM instead, budget a day for it. Airtel bars incoming and outgoing SMS for 24 hours after eSIM activation, including OTPs — so anything needing a bank one-time-password is locked for a day. Jio applies a DoT-mandated 2-hour cooling period plus an IVR confirmation. And Vi does not offer eSIM at all in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Orissa, Assam or the North East. Punjab is fine.

4. Phones bought in India often lack eSIM — check before gifting or borrowing. Samsung India's own support page lists the A54, A35 and A36 as eSIM-capable only in Europe, North America and Korea, not on Indian units. OnePlus 12 and 12R are listed "not supported" on OnePlus India. Xiaomi is the opposite of its reputation — the 14, 15 and 17 all support eSIM on Indian units. Jio publishes the most reliable device list.

5. One myth worth killing. You will read that foreign eSIMs must convert to an Indian profile within six months. That TRAI recommendation applies to machine-to-machine and IoT devices only — not to a traveller's phone. Blogs misapply it constantly.

Stopping in Dubai on the way to India? Airalo's Asia regional plan covers 18 countries including India, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand — but not the UAE. A Toronto→Dubai→Delhi itinerary needs either the global plan or two separate eSIMs. This catches people out constantly.

₹349 for 28 days buys 1.5 GB/day plus unlimited calls — roughly C$5–6, and nothing here comes close. The cost is friction: a store visit with your passport, KYC, an activation delay, and a real phone number. Not viable on a Canadian iPhone 17.
